Nizels Golf and Country Club

Friendly Squad

The SAVS committee are committed to giving our members a range of golf events to participate in on a regular basis and we hope you enjoy being in the Friendly Squad. As part of the offering we have 20 friendly fixtures played home and away, with Nizels teams of 12 players in a 4 ball better ball competion.   These matches are played between end of March and the start of October. You can see the fixture list when you join the squad and are listed below along with a link to the list of members in the squad.

You get to play on other golf courses in Kent for free, the lunch costs around £15, and you get to know lots of SAVS members as the pairs are selected at random. If you want to know more catch either  of the two organisers -Tony Corbett or Wayne Lewis at Nizels or message them on IG.

The fixtures for the friendlies are set before the season starts along with all the other events that you can see in the diary.

Entry is just by joining the squad and making yourself available to play on the IG system. You can pick and choose which matches you want to be available for selection, this does not affect your chances of being picked for the matches you want. If you are new to Friendlies once you have joined and set your availability, please contact one of the organisers who will explain what is expected of a team member and can also answer any questions you may have about a particular match. There are no handicap restrictions or selection criteria. You do need to purchase/ borrow a Nizel's SAVS top as this is the team kit. You can order a top by contacting the SAVS Secretary. The games are played in a friendly spirit but are competitive golf.  The squad of around 50 all get an equal chance of playing, the number of games each person plays are evened out over the season though the Captain plays in most of them. Most of the home matches are played on a Monday, the away matches are often Monday's though some will be on other days as the home club decides the date we play. We try and keep pairs the same for home and away games where that is possible as this adds to the competitive aspect of the matches.

You are allowed to use a buggy in friendies if you need one, generally the teams either carry or use a push/electric trolley. Once selected you will see on IG that you have been selected and you can click on this and on the web version to see the details of the day that the organsisers have arranged. There are also regular emails setting out the arrangements for the day including, meeting times, tee times, who your partner is and opposition names, handicaps and shots allowed. Lunch is a set meal for the day which varies for each game, special dietary requirements can usually be accomodated. Cash is collected on arrival, we select a "volunteer" from the team to collect the cash.

The friendly day of golf consists of the following: Tea and coffee start around 8:30am, team introductions, 18 holes of golf at a fabulous away course (see list below) or at Nizels, lunch, speeches by the Captains - for Nizels either Ian Yates or Derek Searles depart around 2:30 - 3pm. For the home matches we normally arrange a three tee start from 17th, 18th and 1st tees which speeds up play and makes the wait for the last group and lunch shorter.   The format is a little different for a few of the matches e.g. breakfast which will be shown on the match details.

The fixtures are with the following clubs:

Chartham Park ( Also a Club Company member) , Cherry Lodge, Dale Hill, East Sussex National, Kings Hill, ,Lamberhurst, Redlibbetts; Westerham,West Malling, Wrotham Heath,

Members of the squad are listed here when the sign up closes at the end of February 2026

We produce match reports for the squad to see how each match went and includes highlights of the day. These give an insight of the ups and downs of our friendly season. Once you join the squad these reports can all be found on IG under competitions, matches, results.  One example is included below.

Westerham Away June 24th 2025

The return match against Westerham was played in variable and windy conditions.

They assembled at Westerham under the captainship of last year's SaVs Captain, Charlie Harrison.

The team came away with a loss 3 1/2 to 2 1/2. A valiant effort by all.

Charlie Harrison and Peter Boorman fought hard but succumbed to local course knowledge, as did Leigh Hughes and Derek Searles.

Paul Parker and Graham Lettington had an evenly contested match resulting in a half.

Mark Hacking and Paul Batty's opponents finished 3 over par for the 18 but the Nizel's pair still won 2/1. Thanks to some outrageous chipping from Paul and solid support from Mark.

Kim and Robin were on the other side of well paired opposition.

Paul Weaser playing with Rob Spencer started birdie, birdie and were 4 up after 7. They both continued the trend and finished 5/3.

Overall across the home and away fixtures, Nizels won 8 and lost 4

Well done both teams
